It's been said that the best laid plans sometimes go awry. For Dave Spear that isn't the exception, but rather the rule, for he's had an awfully long string of bad luck lately. His plans to make it back to San Antonio before winter sets in are on indefinite hold when Sarah takes ill and is near death. She can be saved, but her recovery will take several months. Meanwhile the family will be cooling their heels in the tiny town of Blanco. They'll be guests of Dave's old friend Red and her best friend Lilly, and will be tempted to make Blanco their permanent home. In the Alamo City Monica dies and young Amy and Robert are left to fend for themselves. Kristy is forced to kill a man in self-defense, and begins to doubt her destiny.
