Herbert Spencer was one of the foremost polymaths of his time, described as "the single most famous European intellectual in the closing decades of the nineteenth century". He contributed to a topics as diverse as ethics to anthropology and economics to philosophy. 'First Principles' is his attempt to simplify and assert the core topics of philosophy in the modern age.
