Midnight Prayers
Cullen Vane
There is a widespread belief in Haiti that as a very busy higher entity, God does not have the time for the Haitian's troubles during the daylight hours when millions of people worldwide are awake and invoking the Great One with any number of needs and wants. It is their impression that only at night, while most of the world sleeps, that the line to God is shorter and thus there is a greater chance of being heard. In the poor village of Carries [Carry-ess] four women make their nightly midnight trek up a hill to their poor church to pray, individually and then in conjunction. The story that unfolds is one of pathos and sorrow, belief and redemption but most of all hope that can be found in the most unlikely of manners and hosted by the most unlikely of people who are entwined by one overriding conviction-that God is great and works in ways we often cannot understand.
