His Quaker ancestors owned slaves. During the Civil War, he stole slaves from the rebels by the wagon load. Meet Rev. Joseph Cadwallader. Joseph Cadwallader was born in 1824 and raised a Quaker. He was twice disciplined for marrying non-Quakers. A self-ordained minister, Rev. Joseph Cadwalader was a circuit riding Methodist preacher on the Iowa frontier. He preached against slavery. He volunteered for the Union Army. He was elected Captain of Company K, 32nd Iowa Infantry Volunteers, but was promoted to Regimental Chaplain and Superintendent of Contrabands. He was there when Sherman burned Meridian. He tended to the wounded and dying when his regiment suffered 50% casualties at the Battle of Pleasant Hill, Louisiana. He took part in the forced march to chase Price out of Missouri. After the war Rev. Joseph Cadwalader was active with the American Sunday School Union. He became a traveling evangelist preaching revival in Protestant churches in the Midwest, Florida, and North Carolina. Rev. Joseph Cadwallader died at Black Mountain, N. C. in 1904. He married three times, to Sarah Swart, to Jane Grey Lewers, and to Alice A. White.
