Moby Dick; or, The Whale by Herman Melville was originally published in 1851. The story is told by a sailor Ismael about a captain Ahab, obsessed with revenge on a whale, Moby Dick, a white whale, that on a previous voyage had maimed Ahad by biting off his leg. The Novel was a disaster when published and didn't gain notoriety until after Melville's death during the 20th century at the time of the "Great American Novel."
