Innovation and transformation are risky, even terrifying, concepts, but not more terrifying than what happens to the 56 million students in the U. S. whose futures depend on us if we don?t do something today. If we believe we cannot fail the next generation, then the systemic reform of American public education is a national imperative! In her book, Trina shares why?.. ? Maintaining failing structures ? both ideological and physical ? and tinkering with existing systems won?t generate the results that are necessary. ? It is not enough to create new models, no matter how interesting, engaging, or philosophically on track they may be. The problem with incorporating the great new models of learning into our educational system is exactly that: we are incorporating them into our educational system. ? Technology is a tool, not the answer to improving the education system, and it means nothing without the right people, processes, training and support behind the implementation. ? There is an entire subculture of online activity, networking, and authentic experiences that is creating another whole dimension for digital learners; and understanding how these learners rely on their technology is a necessary component to educating them. ? The new role of the educational union must be to take an active and aggressive stand in laying the framework for a new era that will lead to the rebirth of the American Education System as a system that meets the needs of both the 21st century learner and the 21st century teacher. ? Our education system must be restructured to teach learners how to navigate the information overload that surrounds them every day. ? We must begin to teach children how to learn, rather than what to learn, and from that, how to apply the knowledge gained. ? We must encourage and support school leadership in this new environment and create a climate where innovation is not stamped out before it even begins because school leaders are afraid to fail. The Experts Say... "Anyone seeking to teach and lead in the digital age might move the agenda forward with enough resources and public will, but they will never be a full participant in the movement without reading this work. This work is well reasoned and thoughtful for the think tanks as well as ample ammunition for the practitioner" ? Dr. Bryan Setser ? Partner, 2Revolutions. "Talented and mission focused education executive Trina Angelone has written a must read outline of a better service model, a systemic design for the system our kids deserve" ? Tom Vander Ark, CEO, Getting Smart "Online and blended learning are redefining what it means "to go to school." For millions of students, access to the courses that they need or have interest in, is no longer restricted by the boundaries of their brick and mortar school. Trina has clearly identified the challenges we face" ? Bruce Friend, President, Friend Consulting "This publication should be read by every teacher, teacher-to-be, every principal and every parent. Business leaders, politicians, clergy and others should read this as well? It is a wonderful book and it is my honor to have a foreword expressing my support for your position. You are right on the mark. Best wishes for ACHIEVING YOUR VISION. We all will win!" Abraham S. Fischler, President Emeritus, NSU
