Helps and Hints To Protect Life and Property
Lt Col Baron de Berenger
This special re-print edition of Lt. Col. Baron de Berenger's book "Helps and Hints To Protect Life and Property: With Instructions in Rifle and Pistol Shooting" is a historic guide to self defense. Most historians on the subject consider this the earliest book on self defense. Written in 1835 by Augustus Charles Random de Berenger, a one-time colorist in an artist's studio, the owner of the Stadium Rifle Club at London, a volunteer soldier with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, a renowned shot with rifle and pistol and all around colorful character, this classic text provides insight into how ordinary persons can defend themselves and their property from all kinds of dangers. Included are modes of defense against everything from common thieves on up to other potential entanglements, as well as personal advice on safety, that take the form of a series of letters written for the author's son. Among his large body of advice was "An UMBRELLA even, on an emergency, may be converted into a weapon, provided the stick is sound, but only to give point; or it may be opened quickly, to serve as a shield to hide your pulling a pistol out of your pocket, (taking care how you cock it safely with one hand, ) thereupon to shoot a robber, either through or under it, taking great care to hit him." A one of a kind read that is surprisingly still practical and pertinent all these years later. Note: This edition is a perfect facsimile of the original edition and is not set in a modern typeface. As a result, some type characters and images might suffer from slight imperfections or minor shadows in the page background.
