Richard Attenborough, Ian Holm and Lee Remick star in this surreal comedy based on the novel by Iris Murdoch. Wine merchant Martin Lynch-Gibbons (Holm) is worried that his wife Antonia (Remick) might find out about his mistress (Jennie Linden), then he discovers that his wife wants a divorce because she is having an affair with her psychiatrist Palmer (Attenborough), who also happens to be Martin's best friend. When Palmer's sister Dr Honour Klein (Claire Bloom) visits from Oxford she discloses Martin's affair to Antonia and the arrival of Martin's womanising brother (Clive Revill) sets off a number of impulsive liaisons as passion drives the characters to hysteria.
